Orthodontic Emergencies
Quick Tips & Support When You Need It Most
Orthodontic emergencies are uncommon, but if you’re in severe pain or can’t manage an issue on your own, call our office right away—we can help! In many cases, minor problems like loose wires or poking brackets can be handled at home temporarily using wax or simple tools. Still, it’s important to contact us as soon as possible to schedule a repair and keep your treatment on track.
General Soreness
Mild soreness is normal when you first get braces, and your teeth may be tender for a few days. Stick to soft foods and rinse with warm salt water to ease discomfort. If the pain is strong, you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever. Irritation to your lips, cheeks, or tongue should subside within a couple of weeks—wax can help ease the friction.
Headgear
Discomfort from headgear is often caused by not wearing it as directed. Be sure to follow your orthodontist’s instructions and call us if the facebow becomes bent. Wearing it consistently will reduce discomfort over time, so stick with wearing it for the prescribed hours.
Loose Applicance
If your appliance is poking you, place orthodontic wax on the sharp area for relief.
Loose Bracket
If the bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and use wax if it’s irritating. If it’s completely loose, save it in an envelope and bring it to your next appointment.
Loose Wire
Use tweezers or pliers to gently reposition the wire, and floss to hold it in place if needed. If that doesn’t work, clip the wire behind the last secure bracket and cover any sharp ends with wax.
Poking Wire
Use a pencil eraser to gently push the wire down or apply wax to protect the area from irritation.
Other Emergencies
Other orthodontic emergencies, like broken appliances or severe pain, may require immediate attention. If you experience any issues that can’t be resolved at home or are unsure how to handle the situation, contact our office right away for assistance.

8. What if my retainer isn’t fitting properly?
